Thornhill is a small rural village situated in the heart of Dumfries
and Galloway, close to Drumlanrig Castle, the ancestral home of the Duke of Buccleuch and
Queensberry.
The Thornhill group is a long established team, which now comprises of dancers aged 11 to 40+. They
have danced many times in various locations. They have toured Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei,
sponsored by the British Council and also performed in Korea and Japan. Nearer to home they have
attended folk festivals in Holland, Belgium, Germany and France, as well as competitions throughout
Britain. The group has an adult and a youth team, which both have won many festivals throughout the
years.
The team is accompanied by the bagpipes or a Scottish Country Dance band, and have also toured along
with the Buccleuch and Queensberry Pipe Band. The groups’ programme consists of reels, jigs and
strathspeys, as well as ladies step dances and men’s highland sword dances.
