The Royal Scottish Country Dance
Society -
South Wales Branch

The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is based in Edinburgh and
consists of 169 branches worldwide. The South Wales Branch was formed in 1969, although individual
groups have been providing Scottish country dancing in the area for some years before then.
The Branch covers a wide geographical area stretching from Newport to Fishguard, up to Aberystwyth
and across to Builth Wells. Of the 97 UK branches, it probably covers the widest geographical area.
The Branch organises various functions throughout the year: Annual Ball; Day School; Festival of
Dancing staged in Caerleon Roman Amphitheatre; newcomers’ dance; and a residential weekend at a
country house hotel. It also organises a haggis supper and dance for St. Andrews Night and dances
specifically for the children of the area.
RSCDS teachers currently run classes in Cardiff, Barry, Milford Haven, Fishguard and Aberystwyth.
The Branch is also involved in training new teachers to a standard set by the Society and currently
eight trainees are undergoing instruction.
